Our Story – The Birth of Blue Tongues Rugby

Blue Mountains Junior Rugby Club (Blue Tongues Rugby) was proudly established by Craig Behringer, Rod Sargeant, and David McCulloch — all current and former senior players of the Blue Mountains Rugby Club.

Driven by a shared passion for developing junior rugby in the region and creating a clear pathway for young players to progress through to senior ranks, these founders laid the foundations for what would become one of the most welcoming and family-focused clubs in the Sydney Junior Rugby community.

The junior club was officially formed in late 2006 and entered its first teams into the Sydney Junior Rugby Competition in 2007.
Since then, Blue Tongues Rugby has continued to grow from a small local initiative into a vibrant, community-driven club — proudly representing the Blue Mountains with heart, teamwork, and spirit.

Our History – From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Junior Club

In 2007, Blue Tongues Rugby took to the field for the very first time with just two teams — competing in the Under 10s and Under 12s divisions of the Sydney Junior Rugby Union (SJRU) competition.

What began as a small, passionate initiative led by local rugby stalwarts quickly grew into a thriving community club.
By the 2012 season, the Blue Tongues proudly fielded six teams across the U10s, U11s, U13s, U14s, U15s, and U17s age groups — each boasting between 18 and 22 registered players representing the Blue Mountains with heart and pride.

A Record of Success

Since joining the Sydney Junior Rugby competitions, Blue Mountains Junior Rugby Club has gone from strength to strength.
As of 2024, our junior teams (U10s through to Opens) have featured in 24 Grand Finals across their respective age divisions — bringing home an impressive 15 Premiership victories.

These achievements are a testament to the hard work of our players, coaches, volunteers, and families who bring the spirit of the Blue Tongues to life each and every season.

Growing the Game – From Minis to Opens

Over the years, the club has expanded to include ‘Minis’ teams (U6s to U9s) — our future Blue Tongues and the lifeblood of both the Junior and Senior clubs.
Today, we regularly field up to eight teams each season, from Under 6s through to Opens (U17/18s), competing across the Sydney Metro region for 13 weekends of rugby between March and August.

Many of our teams also enjoy additional annual tournaments and carnivals, such as the Canberra Junior 7s, offering players even more opportunities to develop their skills and experience the joy of rugby.

Our Ongoing Mission

While players, coaches, and committee members may change over time, one thing remains constant —
our commitment to providing a platform for kids of all ages, sizes, and abilities to play and love this great game of rugby in the Blue Mountains and beyond.

We’re proud of where we’ve come from — and even more excited about where we’re going.
The future of Blue Tongues Rugby is bright, and it’s powered by the same community spirit that started it all back in 2006.

The Blue Mountains Junior Rugby Club acknowledges the traditional custodians and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and future. We recognise and celebrate their culture, connection to land, water and community.
