Girls’ Rugby at BMJRC

At Blue Mountains Junior Rugby Club, we are proud to offer a strong and growing pathway for girls in rugby — from Minis (U6) right through to Opens.
Rugby is a sport that celebrates differences in size, strength, shape, and speed. It empowers girls with confidence, builds resilience, and develops lifelong friendships through teamwork, fitness, and skill development.
Whether your daughter is trying rugby for the first time, looking for a team to grow with, or aspiring to play representative rugby, there’s a place for her here at BMJRC.

Minis (U6–U9) – Building Confidence and Fun

-
U6 & U7: Play Tri-Tag Rugby (non-tackle), focusing on fun, movement, and teamwork.

-
U8 & U9: Transition into safe tackling in smaller-sided games (U8s play 7-a-side, U9s play 10-a-side).

-
Minis rugby is mixed, so girls play alongside boys in a fun and inclusive environment.

-
This is the perfect introduction to rugby, teaching fundamental skills and giving girls the confidence to grow into the game.

Junior Girls Rugby (U10–U12) – Expanding Skills

-
Girls can continue in mixed rugby up to U12, with a strong emphasis on developing core rugby skills.

-
This age group focuses on teamwork, learning positional play, and building fitness in a safe and supportive way.

-
At this stage, girls start to get exposure to the wider girls’ rugby community, preparing them for the dedicated Girls-only competitions from U13s.

Sera Naiqama Cup (U13–Opens) – Girls XVs

From U13s onwards, girls transition into Girls-only competitions, giving them a true pathway in the game.

-
Full-season competition, structured the same way as boys’ rugby.

-
Matches are played under the ‘Game On’ principles, ensuring that if one team has fewer players, numbers can be matched so that more girls get on the field and games stay competitive.

-
Teams are available from U13 through to Opens, allowing girls to continue their rugby journey through their teenage years and beyond.

-
By this stage, mixed-gender dispensations are no longer provided, so all girls will play in the dedicated girls’ competitions.

Girls 7s Rugby – Fast & Exciting (U10–Opens)

For those who love the fast pace of Sevens rugby, BMJRC also participates in the Girls 7s competitions:

-
Run in October–November each year.

-
Open to U10s through to Opens.
-
Perfect for girls who want extra rugby outside the XVs season, or who prefer the speed and space of Sevens rugby.

-
7s rugby offers a great chance for players to showcase their agility, speed, and skills, while enjoying a fun carnival-style atmosphere.

Representative Pathways
For girls who aspire to play at higher levels, there are clear representative pathways:

-
NSWJRU State Championships in the XVs format.

-
From there, players may be selected into Sydney teams and then progress to NSW representative teams.

-
These opportunities allow players to test themselves against the best, while still enjoying their local club rugby at BMJRC.
