Play Junior Rugby with BMJRC

At Blue Mountains Junior Rugby Club, we welcome players from U5 through to U18. Rugby with BMJRC is more than just a game – it’s about building skills, confidence, and lifelong friendships in a safe and supportive environment.

Minis Rugby (U5 – U9) Saturday Competition

This is where it all begins! Minis rugby is designed to introduce children to the game in a fun, safe and active environment.

  • U5–U7 (Tri-Tag Rugby):
Played with tags instead of tackling, this version focuses on running, passing, catching, and working as a team. Games are 5-a-side and short in duration to keep kids engaged and constantly moving.

  • U8–U9 (Intro to Tackle):
Players are introduced to safe contact rugby, learning the basics of tackling, rucking, and scrummaging. Game sizes gradually increase (U8s play 7-a-side, U9s play 10-a-side) to ease children into the full game structure.

The emphasis in Minis is on fun, participation, and skill-building, not on winning.

Juniors Rugby (U10 – U12) Sunday Competition

At this stage, the game starts to look more like rugby, but with rules tailored to ensure safety and development.

  • Played on smaller fields with slightly fewer players to maximise involvement.

  • More rugby elements are introduced, such as lineouts, scrums, and tackling techniques, but all in modified, age-appropriate forms.

  • Games are played on Sundays, and teams begin to represent BMJRC in Sydney Junior Rugby Union (SJRU) competitions.

The focus is still on participation, skill growth, and enjoyment, while gently preparing players for the full game.

Youth Rugby (U13 – U18 / Opens) Sunday Competition

From U13 upwards, players play under the Australian U19 Law Variations, which are slightly modified from the World Rugby Laws to suit developing players.

  • Matches are played on full-size fields with full team numbers.

  • Scrums, lineouts, rucks, and mauls follow the global game structure, but with safety measures (e.g., limits on scrum pushes).

  • These age groups have opportunities for representative rugby at club, school, and regional levels.

By U17–U18, players are essentially playing the adult version of rugby, with only minor law variations to protect developing bodies.
